DO

Hike the Tepozteco

This is one of the top activities in Tepoztlán. At the summit, you'll find the Tepozteco Pyramid, an ancient temple built by the indigenous people of the region. This pyramid is dedicated to Tepoztecatl, the Aztec god of pulque, fertility, and the harvest. The hike takes around 1.5-2 hours, and is moderately difficult. The trail is steep at parts but well-maintained, and the views at the top are worth it.

Explore the markets

Located in the heart of Tepoztlán, exploring the lively market is a must-do activity. The market immerses visitors in a vibrant array of colors, smells, and tastes with its unique crafts and textiles, fresh produce, and traditional pre-Hispanic food. The food market is on Wednesday and Sundays, and the crafts market is on Saturdays and Sundays.

Tap into your spiritual side

Tepoztlán has many places to do temazcal experiences. Many hotels have temazcals (including La Buena Vibra and Posada del Tepozteco). These are traditional Mesoamerican sweat lodges (similar to saunas) - small, dome-shaped structures made of stone or clay, where participants sit in a circle while hot volcanic rocks are heated and infused with water and herbs to create steam. The ceremony is led by a temazcalero and the experience is meant to promote healing, purification, and spiritual rebirth.

Influenced by indigenous roots and regional ingredients, Tepoztlán's cuisine offers a tantalizing array of dishes and local specialties that capture the essence of traditional Mexican flavors.

• Tepoznieves: Treat yourself to these artisanal ice creams with unique flavors like cactus, avocado, and corn. Made with fresh local ingredients, these creamy delights offer a refreshing and distinct taste, representing the creative essence of Tepoztlan's culinary scene

• Tlaltequeadas: A local specialty, a tlaltequeada is a plant-based delight that embodies the essence of pre-hispanic Mesoamerican cuisine. This unique dish combines a medley of vegetables, fruits, flowers, and seeds into a patty that can be salty, sweet or both. Ingredients range from mushrooms to plantains to rose petals and more

• Pulque: A traditional Mexican beverage with ancient origins and a rich history. Crafted from fermented agave sap, this tangy and refreshing drink has been enjoyed for centuries. With its (very) unique flavor profile and texture, it is best tried with an adventurous spirit
